Heartbroken.

It is taking all of my strength to even write this post, but I know that I need to in order to move on and heal.

Grace started to show way too much interest in Béla all of a sudden. To the point where Béla almost got hurt the other night trying to get away from Grace chasing her. There were other things she was doing too which were total prey-related red flags that made me want to puke while watching, knowing that it was bad news.

I called the adoption place to tell them about her new behaviors towards Béla and without hesitation they suggested I bring Grace back to them for Béla's safety.

It was absolutely heartbreaking for me to make the final decision to bring her back, but from the beginning I always said that Béla's safety came first.

I won't go into detail about what a horrible day I had packing Grace's things up and driving her an hour to the adoption place.

I also can't write about saying my final goodbye.

I can only try to move forward from this and know in my heart that I did what was best for Béla...and for Grace.

I love Grace so very much and know that they will find an excellent home for her without a cat. I've cried so much in the past 24 hours that I don't know how my body is even producing tears anymore. But, I am trying to have a good day with Béla...and trying to look forward to the day that I am ready to adopt again.

Thank you to all of my friends and family for your support and love during this extremely difficult time. I love you all very much.

I guess it is fitting that this song is the song that Grace was named after.
Hopefully Dave Matthews decides to not put this one on the setlist when I see them in September ...but if he does, I hope to smile and not cry.

  1. Oh... I'm so sorry to hear this. I can't imagine how heartbroken you must be. I've been following your blog for just a little bit and through greytalk. It's clear you've done everything 'right', but sometimes things just don't work out. And yes, I'm very sure that Grace will find a great home. I used to foster and I fostered a couple of 'bounces' and they most definitely found great homes. I hope you're able to heal from this and don't give up on the idea of having a greyhound. I know SO many people who have greys and cats and they live together just fine.

  2. I am so sorry it didn't work out. This is my greatest fear come Saturday when we meet our Greyhound. I have to think about my Cavaliers first (especially my little 3-legged guy). You are a responsible pet owner, so don't beat yourself up. Grace will find another wonderful home I'm sure. {{{Hugs}}}

    1. Thank you so very much Katherine! I will be thinking about you on Saturday and sending good vibes that you get a perfect match! Are you on the message boards? If so, what name do you go under so I can hear all about your new love! I actually started looking up about Cavaliers because I'm reading they are good with cats. Sad part is that I think around here you can only get from a breeder. I'm trying VERY hard to only adopt either a shelter dog or retired dog. Its so tough.

  4. Hi Debbie, I too have been following your blog as I am applying to be a foster home for retired hounds. I am so heartbroken for you :( If you want a dog that is good with cats, may I suggest a Curly Coated Retriever? Not sure where you are located, but you may want to look at this girl:

    1. Thank you so much! She is so cute, but sadly I am not ready to open my heart yet to another dog...hopefully someday!!!! Thank you so much for sharing that link. I am in California. I've always loved labs and retrievers - I hear that they are good with cats.

  5. Hi! I loved your blog and all you did for Gracie!! I hope she has found her happy forever home, and that you have found the perfect dog for you. Just to let you know - we are planning to adopt a greyhound...and we will NEVER have a cat...I do love them (and all animals) but my husband and eldest daughter are allergic to cats. Their eyes itch, their nose stuffs up, and they feel miserable. There WILL be loving homes like ours, for dogs like her... And there is the perfect doggy fit for you, somewhere...perhaps a breed with less prey drive and less prone to shyness...the dog of your dreams!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! Grace did find a forever home! It makes me happy to know she has greyhound friends in her new home...with no cats! We did find the perfect rescue for us! Jenny has been with us for 3 years. She was a shelter pup and is as sweet as can be with the cat AND our two rabbits (we adopted them after Grace.) Things worked out for the best in the end. Grace got a new loving home and we adopted the two bunnies and Jenny. :) Her blog is at http://jennyrescue.blogspot.com but I haven't updated it in awhile. Still a fun, cute read :) good luck with your grey!!!! I am excited for your new adventures! They are such beautiful dogs!!!!
